Washington and others believed that. African Americans should train fox• careers in skilled trades and apiculture. The phrase "training school" originates from this idea. W. E. B. Du Bnis weighed in on the other side of the argument. I3e and others believed African Americans should study liberal arts, math, and science in order to ga to college and gain t:he skill, to compete with evhite countexparts. Bath theories guided this high school. It. offered basic educational classes, shop, and home economics. Its training in agricultural methods was especially important, for fa~~ning provided an important livelihood in this county. Louis Leon l~night, Class of 1956, remembers playing the rule of Jack Sprott. on stage and delivering memorable lines. "Itiow we don't lick the platter clean. We are an a war-time diet. We eat much loss. Wo both feel fine. You really ought to try it!" This museum stage is a smaller replica of the une in the oe°iginal building. Above that. original stage, a painted frieze pictured the Cape Henry Lighthouse of Virginia $each City. '= ~ - _ •.~ ~' k At first, Princess Anne County Training ,Schaal had no supporting staff. In fact,, in 19811 the principal's office didn't even have a typewriter, let alone an assistant to use it. Teachers cleaned their own classrooms, and they ale prepared lunch for students. Otealia Kimble Jennings, Cass of 1945, rememhec•s that "lunch was served nut of a coat. closet and hot dogs were ahvays on the menu." ! A supporting stafT was eventually added- By the time Union Kempsville ~ 1ligh School closed, these workers foi~ned a large group. There were i ~ librarians, guidance counselors, an administrative assistant, clerks, - ~ nurses, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, and custodians. Museum will be operated on a schedule that is consistent with the operation of other historic houses operated by the City. • Purchase and/or acquisition of new artifacts and exhibits. • Perform upgrades to existing artifacts and exhibits. • Provide day-to-day grounds maintenance for the school. • Provide Museum security on weekends. • Maintain insurance for loss or damage to the artifacts and exhibits Memorandum of Agreement School Division's Responsibilities • Design and construct Museum. • Manage and oversee construction. • Finance design and construction of Museum. • Provide general maintenance, preventative maintenance, minor repair, custodial services, and garbage removal. • Provide and pay for utilities for Museum, including electric, gas, water, sanitary sewer, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and telephone service. • Finance the initial purchase, acquisition, and/or loan of artifacts • Provide Museum security on weekdays. • Finance capital expenses or capital improvements of the Museum. • Maintain insurance for loss or damage to Museum due to fire. •MOA commences upon execution and continues until June 30, 2011 •May be renewed for up to four (4) successive one (1) year periods upon mutual agreement.
