History of the Virginia Beach Roundtable
The Virginia Beach Roundtable is an informal affiliation of

business and leadership groups that held its first meeting
in 1999.
The group’s first initiative was the development of a
?
campaign that stressed the importance of economic
development and visitor attraction in the fall of 1999.
Other Virginia Beach Roundtable activities have included:
?
City Council candidate interviews, get out to vote
campaigns, voter attitude research, involvement in the
Oceana BRAC process and development of business
priorities for City Council’s consideration.

July 14 -Consensus developed in two categories. First

category –local City Council business community
priorities for consideration. Next –business community
recommendations for State Legislative priorities.

leadership of the eight participating organizations. Final
revisions made to prioritization list. Approval secured
from participating organizations.
August 5 -Results of 2011-2012 process communicated

via letter and delivered prior to City Council meeting.

modify retirement service and age qualification

3. Operational funds secured for passenger rail and state
funding for Appomattox rail bridge replacement
4. Tax reform –elimination of BPOL, Machinery and
Tools and Merchants Capital Tax throughout the
Commonwealth contingent upon a replacement
source of revenue sufficient to maintain local revenue
at current levels. (example –sales tax reform)
Conclusion –The 2011-2012 priorities were developed in
an inclusive process that involved several meetings as
well as online polling of leadership from the participating
entities.
We believe that these are the CONSENSUS views of the
broad-based business interests in Virginia Beach.
