AMERICAN BUS ASSOCL4 TION CONVENTION

James Ricketts, Director — Convention & Visitors Bureau, stated the American Bus
Association (ABA) has over 1,000 motor coach and tour company members. They control
destination decisions for more than 25,000 motor coaches in the United States and Canada.
In addition, Destinations magazine reaches 2,000 operators who control another 10,000 motor
coaches. Over 125 hospitality tourism employees, from throughout the Region and the
Commonwealth, help with the Convention and they served on eleven (11) advisory committees.
These are examples of the committees established and ongoing working committees. The last
meeting filled two (2) meeting rooms at the Convention Center. The red carpet was rolled out
for those attending.
At the airport, there were several Volunteers welcoming the guests as they arrived. In two (2)
days, 978 passengers were greeted.
ABA had 700 motor coach and tour operators with over 3,300 travel industry professionals
registered, which included the 700 motor coach and tour operators. The total attendance at
the meeting was 3,500. There were twelve (12) host hotels and eleven (11) "volunteer" hotels
where the drivers of the charter buses and some of the Volunteers stayed. Some of the hotels
committed to lowering their rates. There were 1,300 sightseeing tour reservations which were
sold out.
Transportation moved over 3,200 delegates daily from twelve (12) hotels to the Convention
Center and back. Over 50 motor coaches were running at any given time to transport the ABA
delegates.
Mr. Ricketts stated there were sixteen (16) major money sponsors not only fromVirginia
Beach but the Hampton Roads Region: Williamsburg, the Great Wolf Lodge and others
through the State of Virginia as well as the Virginia Tourism Corporation. There were over
400 Volunteers which covered 1, 700 four (4) -hour shifts.
Mr. Ricketts continued with his presentation which is made part of these proceedings.

CITY COUNCIL'S BRIEFING
FACILITY UPDATE

Mr. Hansen stated the focus is a Sustainable Facilities Plan for a "Community for a Lifetime"
making some new initiatives.
Today's focus is on the "doom and gloom" of the areas where renovations are needed in an
aging City where the workforce is required to report to, work out of and provide the services
to the citizens. Sometimes it is difficult to take care of all the needs all the time and a strategy
needs to be put together.
Mr. Hansen said Council Members and Staff need to take a look at and say things are not as
bad as portrayed today because a lot of commitments and decisions have been made and
provided a lot of resources. A new maintenance facility in Building 9, brand new landscape
services out of Dam Neck, replacement and renovations have been done through the City, built
and renovated fire stations, built a 3rd Precinct, library renovations and built a brand new
911/EOC in Building 30. City Council Members have been aggressively looking at the facility
requirements to maintain a state of the art government and be the "Community for a
Lifetime': Today's focus is going to be on the needs of the City.
Mr. Hansen completed his presentation, which is made part of these proceedings.
