ITEM # 29663 REMARKS OF MAYOR OBERNDORF l,layor Meyera Oberndorf introduced a special lady in the audience, Mrs. Dabney, Principal of Point O'View Elementary School. On Flag Day, June Fourteenth, she and all the students in her school presented Mayor Oberndorf with her gavel engraved to use as Mayor of Virginia Beach. The gavel was presented from her "Point 01 View i-amily". Mayor Oberndorf looked upon the City Council and all of the 380,000 residents as part of the "Virginia Beach family". Virginia Beach is a bright, mature, intelligent, articulate City on the cutting edge of technological advances, as far as land planning and hopefully bringing on a reliable water source as well as attracting industry and good families. Mayor Oberndorf extended appreciation to Members of City Council. Mayor Oberndorf also extended appreciation to City Manger Watts and will look forward to serving under the Council-Manager form of government. Mayor Oberndorf looked forward to having the opportunity to continue her relationship with the excellent professionals in the City. Playor Oberndorf expressed appreciation to her family. Her children could not be in attendance as her daughter, Marcie, is employed with the City of Charlottesville in their Economic Development Department. The other daughter, Heidi, is in Florida at the Florida Institute of Technology. Mayor Oberndorf acknowledged her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Ellenson, her aunts, uncle and other members of the fatqily. Her husband, Roger, has been her guide, her confident and best friend. Mayor Oberndorf introduced the Honorable Frank W. Sherrill, Mayor of Social Circle, Georgia and his lovely wife, "Scottie".
