Iaquinto, House of Delegates, the Honorable John J. Welch, III, House of Delegates, Philip J. Kellam, Commissioner of the Revenue, School Board Member- Elect Lyndon S. Remias. June 30, 2006 4 Item IV-I. RECOGNITION OF RETIRING MEMBERS OF CITY COUNCIL PRESENTATION ITEM # 55389 Mayor Oberndorf PRESENTED a Resolution in Recognition to: Councilman Richard A. Maddox Beach - District 6 Richard A. Maddox began serving on the Virginia Beach City Council July 1, 2002. Councilman Maddox has served ably during difficult and complex decision making. He was appointed by his colleagues to represent the City on the Transportation District Commission of Hampton Roads and served as City Council Liaison on the JLUS Task Force, Convention Center, Towing Advisory Board, Real Estate Tax Relieffor Senior Citizens, Old Beach District Advisory Board, Rudee Loop, 3rt Street Development and Military Appreciation Day. The City Council is grateful for the service Richard A. Maddox has provided the citizens of the City of Virginia Beach. June 30, 2006 - 5 - Item IV-2. RECOGNITION OF RETIRING MEMBERS OF CITY COUNCIL PRESENTATION ITEM # 55390 Mayor Oberndoif PRESENTED a Resolution in Recognition to: Councilman Jim Reeve Princess Anne - District 7 Jim Reeve began serving on the Virginia Beach City Council July 1,2002. Councilman Reeve has served ably during difficult and complex times as Liaison on the JLUS Task Force, Agricultural Advisory Board, Beaches and Waterways, Open Space Advisory Committee, AICUZ Land Use Task Force, Real Estate Tax Relief for Senior Citizens, False Cape Lodge, Old Beach District Advisory Board, Sandbridge/Ferrell Roads and Transition Area Technical Advisory Committee. The City Council is grateful for the service Jim Reeve has provided the citizens of the City of Virginia Beach. June 30, 2006 - 6 - Item IV-3. RECOGNITION OF RETIRING MEMBERS OF CITY COUNCIL PRESENTATION ITEM # 55391 Mayor Oberndorf PRESENTED a Resolution in Recognition to: Councilman Peter W. Schmidt At-Large Peter W. Schmidt began serving on the Virginia Beach City Council July 1, 2002. Councilman Schmidt served his City well during difficult and complex decision making. Councilman Schimidt has served as Liaison on the Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation, False Cape Lodge, Lynnhaven River, Performing Arts Theater, 3Ft Street Development, Town Center, Transition Area Technical Advisory Committee and Virginia Marine Science Museum Foundation. His expertise in finance served well in establishing the City's Biennial Budget process. The City Council is grateful for the service Peter W. Schmidt has provided the citizens of the City of Virginia Beach. June 30, 2006 - 7 - PRESENTATIONS ITEM # 55392 Council Member Wood advised as Councilman Schmidt has served as Director of the Department of Environmental Quality (appointed by Governor Allan), and Member of the Green Ribbon Task Force and due to his vast environmental knowledge, he is being recognized as an "Equa- Warrior". Councilman Wood adorned Councilman Schmidt with the appropriate "hard hat" helmet. Council Member Villanueva advised Councilman Maddox has always left the City Council with smiles and memorable catch phrases. The most popular "catch phrase" was "If you put lipstick on a pig, it is still a pig -- no matter what shade of lipstick." Councilman Villanueva presented Councilman Maddox with the symbolic pig as a token of appreciation. Councilman Wood advised Councilman Reeve really led the fight on Senior Citizen Tax Relief, but did note in a Port Folio article once that there was a segment of the population that did not pay taxes and he said "Ducks do not pay taxes". Council Members Villanueva and Wood were unable to find a duck for Councilman Reeve; however, did find a chicken that had been "taxed to death ". Council Member Villanueva wished to remember the more senior member of City Council. Rumor has it that Council Lady McClanan's "voting switches are off" and presented her with a "bike horn" to acknowledge when Reba votes 'yes". Council Member Wood wished to recognize the more junior member of City Council. Councilman Dyer, representative of the Centerville District, always discusses how he is treated as a Rookie. As a symbol of promotion, Councilman Dyer was presented with Corporal Stripes for his lapel. Council Members Wood and Villanueva recognized the Council Members-Elect with the official City Council T-Shirt: "It is all about Bayside". William R. "Bill" DeSteph At-Large Barbara M. Sinnen, Clerk of the Virginia Beach Circuit Court delivered the oath of office to the newly elected Members of City Council: William R. "Bill" DeSteph At-Large Barbara M. Uhrin Beach - District 6 July 1, 2006 - December 31,2010 (in accordance with the Ordinance adopted June 27,2006, changing the Councilmanic Elections from May to the General Election in November 2008) June 30, 2006 - 9 - VI.A.
