Jones Bayside - District 4 Vice Mayor 2-year term January 1,2009 -December 31,2010 Council Lady Wilson advised" Vice Mayor Jones was the most experienced member of City Council, having served as Mayor July 1982 - June 1984 and three (3) terms as Vice Mayor for a total of twenty-four (24) years, As Mayor, Louis initiated the Lake Gaston Water Line which was afifteen-year (15) year project. The City of Virginia Beach would not have experienced this growth without a secure water supply. Vice Mayor Jones has served on the Executive Committee for the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission, as well as Chair. He has served also on the Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Virginia Beach Water Task Force. He has been an outstanding leader toward the regional effort to solve transportation problems. " "Louis has served as City Council Liaison to the Development Authority and has been involved in the nes;otiation and implementation of numerous economic development initiatives including the very successful Town Center. He has been a leader and worked diligently to bring consensus amongst our members including the budgetary reconciliations for many years. Council Members like to call Vice Mayor Jones the "Silver Fox" because when he is negotiating, the City will always get the "best deal ". Virginia Beach is a better place because of Louis Jones. VICE MA YOR and CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS ITEM # 58391 The Mayor and newly elected members of City Council introduced their families in attendance: Vice Mayor Jones expressed appreciation for the confidence placed in him and the privilege of serving as Vice Mayor, Councilman Glenn R. Davis is honored to work with his fellow City Council members who have guided this City for a very long time. He is humbled by the support of the citizens and residents and looks forward to his future. Councilman Diezel welcomed Mayor Sessoms "on board". His support of Mr. Jones as the Vice Mayor adds strength to this City Council and will serve the citizens well over the coming years. Councilman Dyer advised it is a privilege to serve. He expressed appreciation to hisfamily, who serve as "his strength ". Council Lady Rosemary is very grateful to her wonderful husband Tom and beautiful daughter, Sarah, in attendance, the voters, her cousin, friends and supporters. She looks forward to serving these next four (4) years. January 5, 2009 11" I I -9- Item V-L. MAYOR'S MESSAGE ITEM # 58392 Mayor Sessoms recognized his family members: his wife - Beverly, who is also celebrating her birthday today, three (3) daughters, Mollie, Kate and Anne Douglas, his youngest, attending the University of Alabama; his mother, who has guided him for 54-years; his sister Barbara and her husband Jeff. By marriage, Mayor Sessoms finally has a son, Kyle Korte married to Mollie and accompanied by his parents. Mayor Sessoms recognized the commitment, hard work and dedication of his predecessor, the Honorable Meyera E. Oberndorf Her service to this city will never be forgotten and he intends to carry forward the legacy of trust and respect she leaves behind. Having served on City Council before, he recognizes the privilege to be working with an outstanding group of leaders that has always put the needs of Virginia Beach and its citizens first. He realizes that he is one vote out of eleven and that the only way to progress as a city is with a shared vision. Mayor Sessoms is lookingforward to working with hisftllow City Council Members, No Mayor could find a better City Manager or staff than Jim Spore and his co-workers. He believes Virginia Beach is the finest City in the country. Throughout the months of campaigning, he "listened". The citizens are very clear about what they want and need and what is important to their lives. Mayor Sessoms wishes these concerns to guide this City Council. There are so many that we can address and where we can get the community involved - starting with growing jobs and economic opportunity for many by bringing new businesses to our City and helping the ones we already have to grow. Mayor Sessoms wants us to continue to improve our environment and neighborhoods through historical preservation, our Open Space program and improving and preserving our waterways, A vital goal has to be improving transportation along with taking the needed steps to move forward and evaluate the benefits of light rail. As a first step, we must begin immediately to obtain the right-aI-way from Norfolk-Southern. Our support of education, public safety and our military must be continued. WI! want a safe, well-educated andfinancially sound city that provides fair and ample opportunities to grow, thrive and succeed. Virginia Beach is certainly a "Community for a Lifetime" We have so much to offir as a city and as citizens and neighbors. Mayor Sessoms hoped his time as Mayor and a member of City Council will be a time when the members honestly listen to each other and do their very best to find the right solutions that speak to our needs and achieve the collective vision for the community. January 5, 2009 11" I I - 10- Item V-M PRESENT A TIONS ITEM # 58393 Council Members Villanueva and Wood continued their tradition of recognizing the new members of City Council. As the new "rookie" Councilman Davis, replaces the resident "rookie" Councilman Uhrin. Councilman Villanueva pinned his new rank on Councilman Uhrin's lapel. Councilman Davis was pinned as a "rookie ". "It is All About Bayside" sweat shirts were presented and comical disguises as "fake glasses ", etcetera were presented to Mayor Sessoms and Councilman Davis. A "magic 8 Ball" was presented to aid in decisions. Two (2) surfboards "Strawberry Inflated Shortcake" and energy drinks were presented. A rat "New Jersey's symbols" and dice were presented as examples of Councilman Dyer's home state of New Jersey. A nice farm puzzle was presented. Two bricksfrom a couple of historic homes in Bayside (Thoroughgood and Lynnhaven House) were presented to signifY our heritage, A little "Bobble Headed "jigure, representing Councilman Diezel, was also presented as well as a tactical vest.
