Americans should train fox• careers in skilled trades and
apiculture. The phrase "training school" originates from this
idea. W. E. B. Du Bnis weighed in on the other side of the
argument. I3e and others believed African Americans should
study liberal arts, math, and science in order to ga to college
and gain t:he skill, to compete with evhite countexparts.

Classes pnsed in firont of them, and class plays, dance and
other mi,isical performances, presentations, and graduation
ceremonies funk place nn them. `I"hc stage fact.m•s in many
alumni memories of this school. Louis Leon l~night, Class
of 1956, remembers playing the rule of Jack Sprott. on stage
and delivering memorable lines. "Itiow we don't lick the
platter clean. We are an a war-time diet. We eat much loss.
Wo both feel fine. You really ought to try it!"
This museum stage is a smaller replica of the une in the
oe°iginal building. Above that. original stage, a painted frieze
pictured the Cape Henry Lighthouse of Virginia $each City.
I~iaw, thanks to a picture in the 1946 yearbauk that shows
the ur•iginal image, than museum stage has a replica of that

At first, Princess Anne County Training ,Schaal had no
supporting staff. In fact,, in 19811 the principal's office
didn't even have a typewriter, let alone an assistant to use
it. Teachers cleaned their own classrooms, and they ale
prepared lunch for students. Otealia Kimble Jennings, Cass
of 1945, rememhec•s that "lunch was served nut of a coat.
closet and hot dogs were ahvays on the menu." !
A supporting stafT was eventually
added- By the time Union Kempsville ~

foi~ned a large group. There were
i ~ librarians, guidance counselors, an
administrative assistant, clerks,
- ~ nurses, cafeteria workers, bus
drivers, and custodians. All were
respected as part cif the school Eamily,
ms •,
as their inclusion in yearbooks and
alumni memories attests.
