Floodplain Disclosure
August 19, 2003
Presented by
David C. Sullivan
Why Floodplain Disclosure?
• Over the past few years a growing number of
homebuyers in Virginia Beach have
expressed concern over not being aware of
floodplain impacts.
• City Council discussed the possibility of
using a disclosure process similar to the one
enacted for AICUZ in the 1990's.
• Councilmember Rosemary Wilson called
together a stakeholder group to discuss the
problem and possible solutions.

Proposed Solution
• Before enacting new regulations, first try a
voluntary compliance effort.
• Provide a "Homebuyers" website on
VBgov.com that would provide detailed
floodplain information along with other
relevant Information.
• Work with the local real estate industry to
train and provide information so that buyers
and sellers can be fully informed.
• Publicize and promote the "Homebuyers"
website as a resource for individuals
• VBgov.com/homebuying.
