Where will we be? Where do we want to be? • Our Goal is to create a compelling vision for the future that people will support and embrace 2 Make up of the committee Appointed by the Mayor in January 2011 (13 members appointed) Diverse group of community professionals Sought involvement from “younger” citizens for a more diverse visioning (Megan Paraiso ODU graduate) 3 We have an aggressive schedule –meeting twice a month Meetings are open and we regularly have citizens attend the sessions; over the last several months it has included a number of recent college graduated who are interested in the Community and our work Website –we post meeting notes; research documents; meeting videos 4 The first phase of our work has involved understanding the forces affecting our Community and the future – Lastweek we began Phase 2 –agreeing on the assumptions and trends that will most impact our future 5 During the first phase of our work we have had presentations by experts and leaders on the topics listed in this slide. Everyone has been extremely generous with their time and sharing their knowledge and understanding of future direction in their areas. Economic development • Military presence • Modes of transportation • Safe and stable neighborhoods • Quality of education • Employment for future generations • Demographics • Agriculture reserve • Urban and cultural opportunities • Recreational and environmental preservation, etc. • 6 The upcoming schedule includes the the items listed here. With every presentation we ask: What stood out and what are the implications for our future? Witheach topic we capture the elements that surprise us, the opportunities that are presented, and those things that could create challenges. We’ve labeled them our “AH HA” moments. 7 Reliance/dependency on real estateThese are a few examples of what will influence our Community in years to comein your own home!–as an outpatient Medical advances that would allow you to receive more treatment in medical schoolMore women are graduating from college then men and more are The increasing demand for local foodsThe emphasis on personal health and wellness-Social trends military, health caretourism, economic development, –Effective funding to support We are excited about some of the things we are learning from the trends -to highlight just a few Influence and Power of Technological changes Hyper-connectivity creates unlimited opportunities for all industries and how services are delivered Breaks down the barriers to where we live and work Demands a workforce with higher skill sets Demographic changes/trends A more diverse population in terms of age, cultures, etc. Aging/greying population –people are living longer A trend of returning to multi-generational households The Boomer generation will continue to volunteer as they age A trend of single women being head of household Military uncertainty is influenced by politics and funding. Where are the trends taking us? Environmental As natural resources becomes even more scarce, green sustainability becomes a core Economically sound way to do business Preservation –beaches, parks, natural areas Clean water Funding Outdated funding mechanism (example –Roads funding is based 8 on a 1930’s funding structure) Our final phase of work will include looking at the opportunities and challenges in looking forward. We want to paint a picture ….. give Virginia Beach an identity. “A World Class….” It will create a Vision –a picture of what life will be like in Virginia Beach in 2040 A day in the life of a Virginia Beach child, family, worker, etc. As we mentioned, our goal is to create a vision that will inspire and create a passion for our future.
