Mayor William D. Sessoms, Jr., called to order the SPECIAL FORMAL SESSION of the VIRGINIA
BEACH CITY COUNCIL for the purpose of the "CEREMONIAL OATH OF OFFICE" in the City
Council Chamber, Tuesday, January 3, 2017, at 2:30 P.M.
Council Members Present:
Jessica P. Abbott, M Benjamin Davenport, Robert M Dyer, Barbara
M. Henley, Vice Mayor Louis R. Jones, Shannon DS Kane, John D.

In accordance with the Virginia Beach City Code, Section
2-21, and by the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of
Virginia Beach, I hereby call for a SPECIAL FORMAL
SESSION of the VIRGINIA BEACH CITY COUNCIL:

2401 Courthouse Drive
The purpose of this SPECIAL FORMAL SESSION is the
Ceremonial Oath of Office to newly elected Members of City
Council and the election of the Vice Mayor. Honorable Judge Les
Lilley will be presiding.
Please come early[1:30 P.M.]for the RECEPTION in City
Hall, Room 218, honoring the newly elected Members of City

MAYOR and CITY COUNCIL
COMMENTS
Council Lady Wilson stated it is a distinguished honor to serve the City. This is her 4`" term and she is
thrilled to represent this wonderful City. The City has some challenges; however, she feels there are so
many opportunities for the City and she is excited about the future.
Councilman Dyer stated it is a privilege to be allowed to serve the City for an additional four years and
he truly feels the best years are ahead.
Council Lady Kane stated this is the third time over the past four (4)years she has been sworn in and is
excited this will be her first four-year term in serving the Citizens. She looks forward to putting the City's
"best foot forward"and moving forward in a positive direction.
Council Lady Abbott stated she is completely grateful for this opportunity and will do her best to serve
Kempsville District and the entire City.
Vice Mayor Jones congratulated those elected and re-elected to City Council. Vice Mayor Jones thanked
City Council for re-electing him to serve as Vice Mayor. He feels it is a privilege and honor to be serving
the City.
Mayor Sessoms stated it is a true honor to be the Mayor of the "Greatest City in the World"and serve the
greatest citizens in the world. Mayor Sessoms also acknowledged the City Council for all of the work
they do each day to make the City a better place. Mayor Sessoms recognized and thanked his wife,
Beverly; sister, Barbara; his three daughters, Molly, Kate and Anne Douglas, in addition to his two
granddaughters, Muddle and Willie. His grandson is still a bit young for such occasions.
