Wooten Council Members Absent: None 2 MAYOR'S CALL FOR FORMAL SESSION ITEM#69159 Mayor Dyer read the Mayor's Call for the SPECIAL FORMAL SESSION: April 18, 2019 "HONORABLE MEMBERS OF CITY COUNCIL In accordance with the Virginia Beach City Code Section 2-21, and by the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Virginia Beach, I hereby call for a SPECIAL FORMAL SESSION of the VIRGINIA BEACH CITY COUNCIL: Tuesday,April 23, 2019 4:00 P.M. City Council Chamber Building 1, City Hall, 2"d Floor 2401 Courthouse Drive The purpose of this SPECIAL FORMAL SESSION is to conduct public interviews for the finalist to fill the vacant Beach District City Council seat. Immediately following, City Council will recess and convene into CLOSED SESSION for discussion. Immediately following the discussion, City Council will return to the City Council Chamber to APPOINT the Beach District City Council Member, and the new member will take the Oath of Office. Immediately following the Oath of Office and the Mayor's Formal Seating of City Council, Council will then recess and convene into CLOSED SESSION for the purposes of City Council review of the submissions to fill the vacant Rose Hall District City Council seat and identification of those individuals to be interviewed. Dyer Mayor Cc: City Manager City Attorney City Clerk Deputy City Managers Communications Office 3 CANDIDATE INTERVIEWS FOR BEACH DISTRICT COUNCIL SEAT ITEM#69160 Mayor Dyer DECLARED A SPECIAL FORMAL SESSION to conduct public interviews for the Beach District Candidates: Leah Malbon Davenport Megin Kennett Louisa Strayhorn Guy King Tower Ms. Davenport expressed her appreciation to City Council for the opportunity to be considered. Ms. Davenport advised she is a Department of Defense Attorney with a degree in political science, has extensive training in leadership, and natural disasters. She feels she will provide a fresh perspective on issues the City is facing. Ms. Kennett expressed her appreciation to City Council for the opportunity to be considered and advised she is withdrawing her application due to a potential conflict with her employer and the City. Ms. Strayhorn expressed her appreciation to City Council for the opportunity to be considered. Ms. Strayhorn advised, as a former member of City Council, she has experience serving on both City Council and the School Board. She understands the budget process and was recently appointed to the Virginia Port Authority Commission and their Audit Committee. Ms. Strayhorn advised she is a Master Coach and has an MBA in Finance with a passion for helping small businesses. Mr. Tower expressed his appreciation to City Council for the opportunity to be considered. Mr. Tower advised he is highly qualified as a corporate lawyer with a lifetime of law experience in business and mediation. He expressed his passion for fairness and good government and is a founding member of Virginia's largest private mediator provider. Mr. Tower promised, if selected as a Council Member, he would contribute to the best of his abilities, his skill, knowledge and influence in the service to the City.
