The purpose of the committee is to work cooperatively with the Department of Economic Development/City to support and strengthen City-Navy relations. Identify opportunities with the various Navy commands that engage defense contractors in mission support and including working with the Navy to assist private contractors in location to and conducing business in the City of Virginia Beach. September 13, 2022 8 CITY MANAGER'S BRIEFINGS PUBLIC HEALTH UPDATE ITEM#73262 3:04 P.M. Mayor Dyer welcomed Dr. Caitlin S. Pedati, District Director. Dr. Pedati expressed her appreciation to City Council for their continued support. Dr. Pedati provided updates on the following: COVID-19: o Activity level is currently low with an expectation to see a rise in the fall. o Vaccinations for the VA4 and VAS variants are available and are recommended for anyone twelve(12)years and older who have not been fully vaccinated or received a booster in the past two (2)months. Influenza: o Activity level circulates more often in the fall. o People are encouraged to get vaccinated in October to allow the two (2) to four(4) weeks to become fully effective. Monkey Pox: o Virus has reemerged with 57,000 cases reported globally. o There have been 21,000 cases reported in the United States, 409 cases in Virginia and 21 cases in the City. o The virus is spread through close skin to skin contact and can cause a rash,fever and swollen lymph nodes. o An approved FDA vaccine is available and can prevent the development of Monkey Pox even if someone has already been exposed to the virus. o Anyone who has been exposed or is at a high risk of exposure, is encouraged to get vaccinated. o To date, the Virginia Beach Health Department has provided over 2,600 vaccinations. Dr. Pedati advised anyone interested in receiving any of the above mentioned vaccinations, to go to https://vaccinate.virginia.govi for more information. Council Member Henley distributed copies of the proposed Resolution, "Declaring the Month of October as Fall Clean-up Month" and advised it will be considered on the next City Council Agenda, attached hereto and made a part of the record. Council Member Henley requested the Body to let her know if they will support the Resolution in order to include their names on the Resolution. The Body unanimously advised they would support the Resolution. September 13, 2022 REQUESTED BY COUNCILMEMBER HENLEY 1 A RESOLUTION DECLARING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2 AS FALL CLEAN-UP MONTH 3 4 WHEREAS, earlier this year, the City Council asked the City Manager to develop 5 a plan for enhanced education and engagement regarding clean, healthy and beautiful 6 waterways, and staff engaged a facilitator who held listening sessions with the 7 community, including representatives of environmental groups, retailers, and the 8 community at large; 9 10 WHEREAS, the listening sessions brought to light a lack of public awareness of 11 steps already being taken by the City to improve our waterways, such as the City's Adopt- 12 A-Drain program, Clean the Bay Day in June, and the work of the City's Clean Community 13 Commission; 14 15 WHEREAS, these listening sessions also made clear that City residents, retailers, 16 and environmental groups share the goal of promoting clean and healthy waterways; 17 18 WHEREAS, clean waterways and clean communities help make the City a 19 healthier place to live for our residents, and clean waterways economically benefit the 20 City by attracting visitors who seek clean and healthy places to visit and business that 21 seek clean communities when determining where to locate or expand; and 22 23 WHEREAS, the promotion of clean waterways and the removal of litter are ways 24 that citizens, environmental groups, civic organizations, and the business community can 25 work together for the betterment of our City by promoting cleaner waterways, and those 26 efforts are also ways that individuals can support the City's extensive efforts to prevent 27 flooding; 28 29 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY 30 OF VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA: 31 32 That the City Council hereby designates October 2022 as Fall Clean-Up Month in 33 the City of Virginia Beach; and 34 35 That the City Council encourages and calls upon neighborhoods, community 36 groups, civic organizations, non-profits, and businesses throughout the City to host clean- 37 up events in October, and the Council calls upon residents to support and participate in 38 those efforts in furtherance of the City's goals for Clean, Healthy and Beautiful 39 Waterways. Council Member Moss advised a separate letter to stakeholders will also be mailed shortly, to request their feedback as well. Council Member Moss advised dates for the two(2)workshops to solicit public feedback will be announced as soon as they are determined. Council Member Moss further advised similar Noise Ordinances from New Orleans and Boston have been reviewed as recommended and will be considered for reference.
