101 WHY CCSLRI?
• Hampton Roads is one of the unique coastal
regions that is and will experience increased
flooding risk because of sea level rise.
• Scientific evidence predicts the oceans' rise of
2 feet or more before the end of the century.
• Combinations of rising sea level, potentially
stronger storms and changing ocean and
estuary conditions will challenge all aspects of
life in the region.
1
8/31/2012
"-r' WHY CCSLRI?
• Old Dominion is uniquely situated and very
well qualified to assess the multitude of
potential crises from sea level rise
• One of only a handful of large, research
universities in the country to address this
issue
• Internationally recognized faculty experts
• Virtually unique in our multi-disciplinary
approach
WHAT IS CCSLRI?
• Launched December 2010
• Program of research, education and leadership to
address the challenges faced by a coastal metropolis
like Hampton Roads
• Engage the university's experts and the region's leaders
in a broad study of how this issue could affect our
economy, housing, ports and infrastructure
• Initiative utilizes research and scholarship in all six ODU
colleges
• Led by Larry Atkinson, Stover Professor of Oceanography

A
`0' INCREASING FLOODING RISK
• Seas are rising because the water is
warming(and expanding), land ice
is melting, ocean currents are
changing, and, locally, we are
sinking
• Prevailing scientific evidence
lrojects sea level to go up by at ,«
east 2 feet by century's end, and `
possibly by 5 feet or more. —'

CITY COUNCIL'S BRIEFINGS
OCEANS 2012
4:22 P.M.
Mayor Sessoms welcomed Ray Toll, Chairman and Mark Bushnell, Technical Chairman. Mr. Toll
expressed his appreciation to City Council for their continued support. Mr. Toll advised OCEANS '12
Hampton Roads brings together technology, people and ideas that will help to expand the understanding
of the earth's largest natural resource. The conference, well recognized as the international forum for
ocean engineers and marine technology professionals is scheduled for October 14 — 19 at the Virginia
Beach Convention Center.
Because of its proximity to naval bases and federal agencies, the conference will involve a number of
federal partners with early indications suggesting a record number of 2,500 attendees. Almost 1,000
papers will be presented in 200 sessions, along with intriguing technology displays in 200 exhibitor
booths.
Old Dominion University, as host university for OCEANS '12, encourages colleges and universities to
exhibit their ocean-related capabilities, and to sponsor students and faculty to attend. The conference
includes the following topics of local interest: National Ocean Enterprise, Marine Renewable Energy,
Sea Level Rise/Coastal Inundation, Integrated Ocean Observing, and Marine Vehicle Autonomy.
Mr. Troll thanked the three honorary chairs that have lent support to the conference, Mayor William D.
Sessoms, Jr., Virginia Beach, Mayor Paul Fraim, Norfolk, and President John Broderick, Old Dominion
University.
